Frequently asked questions

We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common ones.

1. How is using Scripta better than having my operations group work with our in-house counsel?

Your operations staff are not legal experts, and your in-house attorneys are not likely to be well versed in matters of unclaimed property. Scripta eliminates hours of research, inexperienced mistakes, and uniformed errors by giving you access to thoughtful, experienced, and informed unclaimed property information. We break-down complicated topics into easily digestible information so that your staff can get back to the job of execution.

2. How do you track everything?

Our exact methods are proprietary, but we use a combination of public sources and technological monitoring to stay informed. We then perform our own review and analysis of each change to ensure we reflect the full scope of any impact it will have on the holder and service provider community.

3. How are changes provided to users?

Over our years of experience in the unclaimed property industry, we’ve found that receiving automatic emails every time a minor change happens can be overwhelming and inefficient. Instead, Scripta tracks relevant changes in our Legislative Tracking tool, and makes all changes, upon effectiveness, within our system. If you need to know what has changed, we provide Current Change Report capabilities that can be searched over a user-defined period of time, and filtered by property type.

4. What are the export capabilities?

Scripta’s Comprehensive users can export all standard matrices into .xls or .csv files. Any filters applied within the Scripta application will be reflected in your export.

5. Can users see what is proposed versus what is changing?

Yes, Scripta’s legislative tracking will update upon a law or regulation having been passed and will show an effective date. Likewise, the status of the new version of such law will show that it is in an “enacted” status. For our users’ convenience, we also include an Enacted Change Report function that provides a moment-in-time view of any changes that are in an enacted, but not yet effective, status as of time that the report is run.

6. How do you handle ambiguities in the law?

Scripta understands that unclaimed property is highly nuanced and complex. We strive to provide commentary that indicates when there are ambiguities or uncertainties in the law as well as to educate our subscribers as to the substance of the different positions that various stakeholders may take.

7. Does Scripta have an information security program to protect my data?

Scripta does not need access to any of your customer information or other sensitive data. We provide a password accessible web application through which you can search, review and download (depending on your subscription tier) our information. We do not need access to your systems or your data.

8. What if I have questions about the information I’m seeing on your site?

We are always a phone call or email away. If you are a Comprehensive subscriber, your subscription includes three (3) hours per month of consultative time. All other subscribers can arrange to receive additional research and consultation services on an hourly basis, at highly competitive rates.

9. Can you help me perform analysis, prepare reports, locate owners?

Scripta has a singular focus on providing the most thorough and up-to-date compliance information, we don’t prepare reports or locate lost owners; but we have relationships with some of the most well-regarded service providers in the business and can provide you with an introduction to the best fit for your business’s needs.

10. What are NAUPA codes and how do I know what to search?

NAUPA is the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. It represents state unclaimed property administrators and provides recommendations for standard reporting formats. The current most widely used reporting format is NAUPA II, which consists of 117 unclaimed property codes. Scripta is organized to be searchable by these codes, but also by keyword. If you do not know which NAUPA II code applies to your property, you can look up the codes within our application or use the keyword search function.

Know that some states also have their own state specific codes which either replace or build on NAUPA II. We identify these codes within our search results, but still organize the Property Code search function by NAUPA II codes.

Finally, the unclaimed property industry is eagerly awaiting NAUPA’s adoption of an updated reporting format to be known as NAUPA III. Scripta is ready to adapt our application to allow for NAUPA III property type search, with legacy NAUPA II search being retained, upon the changes becoming effective.
